OpenScroll Terms of Service

Effective Date: August 1, 2026

Welcome to OpenScroll. These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the OpenScroll website, mobile applications, and related services (collectively, the "Service"). By creating an account, accessing, or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, you may not use the Service.

1. Our Mission

OpenScroll is a platform built for Christians, and for anyone exploring the Christian faith, to engage in thoughtful discussion around Scripture, theology, church life, and Christian living. We welcome believers from across denominations and traditions, as well as sincere seekers with genuine questions about the faith.

OpenScroll does not endorse, verify, or adopt the theological positions or opinions expressed by its users.

2. Eligibility

To use OpenScroll, you must:

  • Be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age required by the laws of your jurisdiction.
  • Have the legal capacity to enter into this agreement.
  • Not be prohibited from using the Service under applicable law.

You are responsible for ensuring your use of OpenScroll complies with the laws of your country or jurisdiction.

3. Your Account

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account and password.

You agree to:

  • Provide accurate registration information.
  • Keep your login credentials confidential.
  • Notify OpenScroll immediately if you believe your account has been compromised.

You remain responsible for all activity occurring under your account.

4. Viewpoint Neutrality

OpenScroll is committed to viewpoint neutrality within the Christian tradition.

Lawful discussion, debate, and disagreement regarding Scripture interpretation, doctrine, denominational distinctives, church history, Christian ethics, and public figures are generally permitted.

OpenScroll does not remove lawful content solely because it expresses a minority theological position or denominational viewpoint.

Moderation decisions are based primarily on conduct, legality, platform integrity, and user safety—not on theological viewpoint alone.

5. User Content

You retain ownership of all content you post.

By submitting content to OpenScroll, you grant OpenScroll a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, display, distribute, modify for technical purposes, and otherwise make your content available through the Service.

This license ends when your content is deleted from our systems, except where retention is required by law or for legitimate business purposes.

You represent that:

  • You own the content or have permission to post it.
  • Your content does not violate applicable law.
  • Your content does not infringe another person's intellectual property rights.

6. Acceptable Use

You agree not to use OpenScroll to:

  • Violate any applicable law.
  • Promote or facilitate criminal activity.
  • Make credible threats of violence.
  • Encourage or incite imminent unlawful violence.
  • Share child sexual abuse material or exploit minors.
  • Promote terrorism or terrorist organizations.
  • Distribute malware or malicious software.
  • Engage in phishing or fraud.
  • Impersonate another person in a deceptive manner.
  • Publish private personal information without authorization.
  • Spam users or manipulate engagement.
  • Circumvent security measures.
  • Interfere with the operation of the Service.

7. Christian Discussion & Theological Debate

OpenScroll recognizes that Christians of good faith disagree on many theological and denominational questions.

Accordingly:

  • Criticism and discussion of doctrines, denominations, church leaders, historical figures, and theological traditions is generally permitted.
  • The expression of sincerely held Christian beliefs, across denominations, is permitted.
  • Respectful engagement with questions from non-Christians or those exploring the faith is encouraged.
  • Civil disagreement between denominations and traditions is encouraged.

OpenScroll expects users to debate ideas and Scripture rather than engage in targeted harassment of individuals or denominations.

8. Community Expectations

Users are encouraged to:

  • Treat others respectfully.
  • Support factual claims with reliable sources when possible.
  • Stay on topic.
  • Report rule violations responsibly.
  • Contribute meaningfully to discussions.

Healthy disagreement is welcome. Personal attacks intended solely to intimidate or harass other users are not.

9. Moderation

OpenScroll may investigate reports of misconduct.

We reserve the right to:

  • Remove content.
  • Limit visibility of content that violates these Terms.
  • Restrict account features.
  • Suspend accounts.
  • Permanently terminate accounts.

Moderation decisions may consider:

  • Severity.
  • Frequency.
  • Context.
  • Evidence.
  • Impact on platform integrity.

10. Appeals

Users whose content is removed or whose accounts are suspended may submit an appeal.

Appeals will be reviewed in good faith. Submission of an appeal does not guarantee reinstatement.

11. Verification

Verified accounts indicate only that an account has satisfied OpenScroll's verification requirements.

Verification does not imply endorsement, expertise, credibility, or agreement with the account holder's views.

12. Algorithms and Feeds

OpenScroll may use automated systems to organize, rank, recommend, or personalize content.

We make no guarantee that any particular content will appear in any user's feed.

Algorithmic recommendations do not constitute endorsement.

OpenScroll may remove allegedly infringing material while investigating.

Repeat copyright infringers may have their accounts terminated.

17. Termination

OpenScroll may update these Terms from time to time.

Material changes will become effective after notice is provided through the Service or by other reasonable means.

22. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by the laws of the State of Florida, United States, without regard to conflict of law principles.

Any legal action arising from these Terms shall be brought in the appropriate state or federal courts located in Florida, unless applicable law requires otherwise.
